{"id":26,"date":"2007-11-14T20:35:27","date_gmt":"2007-11-15T01:35:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fruechtetheory.com\/blog\/2007\/11\/14\/glast-calibration\/"},"modified":"2009-11-02T21:05:18","modified_gmt":"2009-11-03T02:05:18","slug":"glast-calibration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fruechtetheory.com\/blog\/2007\/11\/14\/glast-calibration\/","title":{"rendered":"GLAST Calibration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font size=\"2\">The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center has an interesting article dated October 17, called \u201cBy the Light of the Moon\u201d, by Amber Dance of SLAC Today, which can be viewed at the following site: <a href=\"http:\/\/today.slac.stanford.edu\/feature\/2007\/the-moon.asp\"><font color=\"#800080\">http:\/\/today.slac.stanford.edu\/feature\/2007\/the-moon.asp<\/font><\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/font><font size=\"2\">The article states that the moon is \u201can object with an absolutely known gamma-ray output\u201d, \u2013 likely from EGRET data from the 1990\u2019s, and notes that \u201cThe moon would be especially useful for calibrating GLAST,\u201d.\u00a0 Stanford physicist Igor Moskalenko is quoted as saying \u201cUsing the moon as a calibrator, you can always be sure that your data are accurate.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/font><font size=\"2\">An email I received from a NASA scientist in April 2006, in response to one of my own, said that \u201cthe gamma radiation from the Moon was consistent with a conventional model in which cosmic rays hitting the lunar surface produce neutral pi mesons that decay immediately into gamma rays.\u201d, and recommended that I \u201clook elsewhere for possible evidence for gravity photons\u201d.<br \/>\n<\/font><font size=\"2\">The question I have is how could the moon be used to calibrate GLAST if it were glowing at an energy of >100 MeV as a result of cosmic ray bombardment?\u00a0 The bombardment hitting the moon could not possibly be uniform enough from all directions such that it produces a gamma ray output that is steady enough at all times, and in all places where there is a relatively quiet background, so that it can be used to calibrate an instrument.<br \/>\n<\/font><font size=\"2\">I contend that the moon has a constant known output of gamma rays because of gravitational output, with the energy centered at 312.76 MeV.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center has an interesting article dated October 17, called \u201cBy the Light of the Moon\u201d, by Amber Dance of SLAC Today, which can be viewed at the following site: http:\/\/today.slac.stanford.edu\/feature\/2007\/the-moon.asp.
