{"id":663,"date":"2019-09-09T18:58:32","date_gmt":"2019-09-09T23:58:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fruechtetheory.com\/blog\/?p=663"},"modified":"2019-09-09T18:59:38","modified_gmt":"2019-09-09T23:59:38","slug":"atomic-stability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fruechtetheory.com\/blog\/2019\/09\/09\/atomic-stability\/","title":{"rendered":"Atomic Stability"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rutherford states that \u201cLarmor has shown that the condition\nfor no loss of energy by radiation is that the vector sum of the accelerations\nof all the component charged particles shall be permanently zero.&nbsp; If this condition is not fulfilled there will\nbe a steady drain of internal energy from the atom in the form of electromagnetic\nradiation, and unless this is balanced in some way by the absorption of energy\nfrom outside, the atom must ultimately become unstable and break up into a new\nsystem.\u201d * (Rutherford references \u201cLarmor: &nbsp;Aether and Matter, p. 233\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is interesting in that by 1906 it was realized that radiation\nenergy would need to be exchanged in order that atoms and molecules not collapse.&nbsp; Even within the atom, by stating \u201cvector sum\u201d\nit is alluded that energy is exchanged.&nbsp;\nKeep in mind that this was before the Bohr model of the atom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the next paragraph, Rutherford has: &nbsp;\u201cThe positively and negatively charged\nparticles constituting the atom must be so arranged as to form a stable\naggregate under their forces of attraction and repulsion, and at the same time\ntheir arrangement and motions must be such that no energy is radiated from the\natom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">* E.
